STUDIES ON QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF MORINDA CITRIFOLIA

Abstract

Morinda citrifolia has been reported to have a broad range of therapeutic and nutritional values. For further investigation, the qualitative and quantitative phytochemical studies were carried out on leaf, fruits, and stem plant parts of Morinda citrifolia. This plant has been used in treating various diseases such as, heart disease, cancer, hypertension, arthritis, diabetes, muscle pain, etc. Qualitative chemical analysis was done using different extracts (methanol, ethyl acetate, aqueous and chloroform) and the studies indicate the presence of various secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids, reducing sugars, glycosides, and tannins. Quantitative chemical analysis was also performed to determine the total flavonoids and phenol contents. Quantitative analysis showed highest amount of flavonoids content (2.31 mg QE/gm) and total phenol content (1.405 mg GAE/gm) in fruit in methanolic extract.
