Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of Anti arthritic activity of Solanum nigrum in complete
freund’s adjuvant induced arthritis model in rats.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Arthritis was induced in wistar albino rats by a
single sub plantar injection of Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA) into the left
footpad. Rats were treated with prednisolone (10 mg/kg, p.o.) and Solanum nigrum
(200, 400, 600 mg/kg, p.o.) from day 0 to 20. The effects of Solanum nigrum was
evaluated by change in paw volume, body weight , detection of serum rheumatoid
factor (RF), serum C-reactive protein level, Alkaline phophatase, haemotological
parameter , SGOT and SGPT level.
Results: Results showed that Solanum nigrum significantly reduced paw volume,
body weight, rheumatoid factor, C-reactive protein level, alkaline phophatase, WBC
count, SGOT and SGPT level. CONCLUSION: The present results provide clear evidence that the methanolic
extract of Solanum nigrum treatment gives anti-arthritic effect in complete Freund’s
adjuvant induced rheumatoid arthritis.
